A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
