A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the company president, a notable figure at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is noted for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Following the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the final price," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new acquisition exceeds his previous notable purchases:
Despite once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record once again.
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the winner's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
