Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
